Project Description
This project involves the construction of a 500 megawatt (MW) onshore wind power plant with an integrated 150 MW/300 MWh energy storage system in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan, as part of the national strategy to expand renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. It is being implemented by Samruk-Energy JSC in partnership with China Energy Overseas Investment Co., Ltd. under an intergovernmental agreement between Kazakhstan and China signed in November 2024 at COP29. The facility will include modern, energy-efficient wind turbines together with electrical infrastructure such as substations and transmission lines. The energy storage component is designed to enhance grid reliability and address intermittency of wind generation. Preliminary wind resource assessments and feasibility preparations have been carried out, including wind measurements and site analysis. The project is expected to create jobs during construction and operation and contribute to increasing the share of renewables in Kazakhstan’s energy mix. Construction has not yet started, and project documentation including key investment and power purchase agreements remains under development. Expected commissioning is planned for 2028. This initiative also supports regional economic development in the Saryozek area of the Osakarov (Sarybel) district due to the site’s strong wind resources.
