Project Description
The Turgai Paleozoic Exploration Project is a strategic initiative by Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company, KazMunayGas (KMG), aimed at expanding the country's hydrocarbon resource base. The project focuses on exploring deep Paleozoic sedimentary formations in the South Turgai Basin, particularly in the Kyzylorda region. Utilizing advanced seismic technologies and deep drilling methods, the project seeks to identify new hydrocarbon reserves to bolster Kazakhstan's energy sector. As of May 2025, the project has achieved a significant milestone with the successful drilling of the PZ-1 exploratory well. This well reached a depth of 5,500 meters, uncovering a substantial Paleozoic sedimentary complex beneath previously considered basement rocks. The findings include carbonate fractured reservoirs and shales approximately 2,500 meters thick, marking a key scientific discovery that opens new avenues for hydrocarbon exploration in the region.
