Project Description
The project involves the construction of a new runway and a multimodal logistics hub at Shymkent International Airport. The new runway will be 3,500 meters long and 60 meters wide, built to ICAO Category III standards, representing a significant technological upgrade compared to the airport’s current capabilities. The runway will be equipped with high-intensity lighting systems (HIAL) of Category III, replacing the existing Category I system, enabling safe take-offs and landings under low visibility and adverse weather conditions.
The pavement strength of the new runway will reach 80/R/A/X/T PCN units, compared to the current 50/R/A/X/T, increasing by nearly 1.6 times and allowing modern passenger and heavy cargo aircraft to operate without load restrictions. The project also includes the construction of new taxiways and a cargo terminal to expand the airport’s freight-handling capacity and improve regional logistics.
This development is designed to enhance Shymkent’s transit potential, support international air transport, and strengthen the region’s logistics infrastructure. By constructing a new runway rather than upgrading the old one, airport operations can continue without full closure, while the existing runway—operating for over 50 years—can be reconstructed as needed.
The project received a positive state expert review in March 2025, and the construction is planned for completion by Q4 2027. Overall, the initiative focuses on building modern, high-capacity infrastructure to ensure long-term operational efficiency, safety, and international connectivity.
