Kazakhstan’s oil and gas chemical industry is actively developing, with large investment projects being implemented. At present, the country already operates the KPI polypropylene plant. The main feedstock – propane from Tengiz – is delivered to the KPI plant by rail. However, ethane for the future polyethylene plant cannot be transported in this way due to its physicochemical properties and strict storage requirements. The construction of trunk pipelines is the most economical and safe solution for transporting both products.
The trunk pipeline project provides for the simultaneous and uniform transportation of both products, ensuring stability and uninterrupted operation of the production and logistics cycle along the entire chain: TCO–GSC–MT–KPI–SILLENO. In 2026, construction will begin in Atyrau Region on two main pipelines for the transportation of liquefied ethane and liquefied propane from the Gas Separation Complex at the Tengiz field to the Integrated Gas Chemical Complex in the Karabatan area. This project will provide reliable logistics for the raw materials needed by domestic processing facilities and will form part of the creation of a sustainable gas chemical cluster.
Both pipelines will be laid in a single linear corridor, with a total length of 210–213 km each. In addition to the pipelines themselves, the infrastructure will include overhead power transmission lines, a fiber-optic communication line, a route road for year-round technical access, and other auxiliary pipeline facilities. One of the pipelines, with a pipe diameter of 40 cm, is designed to transport 1.6 million tons of liquid ethane per year from the Tengiz Gas Separation Complex with a capacity of 9.1 billion cubic meters per year.
The second pipeline, with a diameter of 30 cm, will deliver 360,000 tons of liquid propane per year to the polypropylene plant Kazakhstan Petrochemical Industries Inc. In addition, this pipeline will enable Tengizchevroil LLP to transport up to 630,000 tons of liquid propane per year to Atyrau.

Workforce: More than 500 workers will be involved during the construction phase. Around 170 specialists, including qualified local personnel, are expected during the operation period.
Project Stages: The completion of the feasibility study paves the way for the design and construction of the main pipelines. The project will create a single technological chain (GSC – Main Pipelines – Petrochemical Plants) for efficient processing and transportation of high-value products.
Cryogenic Risks: In case of product release, temperatures can drop sharply to –100 °C for ethane and slightly lower for propane. Strict compliance with material, equipment, and operational requirements is needed to prevent cryogenic points and accidents.
Pipeline Installation and Protection: The pipeline will be laid underground at a depth of up to 1.5 m. Factory-applied insulation with reinforced external protection and additional insulation for welded joints will be used, along with standard measures for electrochemical protection and safety along the entire route.
