The Kurchatov Power Station is a planned coal-fired electricity generation facility in eastern Kazakhstan with an installed capacity of 700 megawatts, designed to address domestic electricity supply deficits as part of the country’s energy development strategy. It will be built on technologies described as “clean coal” with ultra-supercritical steam parameters, intended to improve thermal efficiency and reduce emissions relative to conventional coal plants. The project was tendered by the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the winner — TOO “GRES Kurchatov” — entered into a contract in January 2026 to finance, design, build, operate, and maintain the plant without direct budget financing. Construction is expected to occur in two phases, with the first 350 MW unit planned for 2029 and the second for 2030, under a broader schedule to complete the project by 2032. The choice of bituminous coal from nearby deposits as the principal fuel reflects local resource availability, and the facility will include modern flue gas cleaning and dust suppression systems to meet environmental standards. The project is intended to create up to 4,000 jobs during construction and 400 permanent jobs in operation, and is part of Kazakhstan’s national plan to add generation capacity through both traditional and clean energy sources.
