PROJECT DESCRIPTION
KAZ Minerals is planning to develop a large copper smelter near Aktogay in the Abay Region of Kazakhstan. The project is intended to add domestic copper-processing capacity and reduce the export of KAZ Minerals’ own copper concentrate. The planned annual capacity is approximately 300,000 tonnes of cathode copper. The latest public information indicates that the project is still at a strategic planning and technology-selection stage rather than confirmed physical construction. KAZ Minerals Management stated in June 2026 that a preliminary feasibility study has been prepared. The project is expected to support Kazakhstan’s policy of increasing domestic processing of mineral raw materials and producing higher-value products inside the country. Earlier government sources said the project would create more than 1,000 new jobs.
