Project Description

This project comprises the construction of a new 500 kV overhead transmission line approximately 604.3 km in length between the Karabatan switching point and the Ulke substation to interconnect the currently isolated Western Zone with the main Unified Power System (UPS) of Kazakhstan. It also includes the reconstruction and expansion of the Ulke 500 kV substation and the construction of a 500 kV outdoor switchyard at Karabatan. The initiative is designed to enhance energy security, reliability of power supply, and the ability to utilize maneuverable generation capacity in the western region to balance electricity and capacity imbalances nationwide. It directly supports national strategic directives to strengthen the grid and integrate renewable generation capacities, contributing to grid stability and operational flexibility. The project is being financed through KEGOC’s own funds and loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Development Bank of Kazakhstan (DBK). The infrastructure will enhance inter‑regional electricity transfer capability and support future renewable energy integration.
