Fetching Project...
Project Description
The project envisages the development of a lithium extraction and processing facility in the Ulan District of the East Kazakhstan Region. It involves mining lithium‑containing ore and establishing a processing plant to produce lithium concentrate (lithium oxide) from the deposit. The German investor HMS Bergbau AG has acquired majority shareholdings in Kazakh companies holding the mining and exploration licences, and plans to bring German technology and finance to the project. The initiative is part of Kazakhstan’s strategic move to become a significant supplier of lithium, a critical raw material for batteries and high‑tech industries. The site is one of several lithium‑bearing deposits in the region, and the project is said to include both extraction and refining phases, potentially supplying global supply chains. It is positioned as a bilateral raw‑materials partnership between Germany and Kazakhstan. Unique characteristics include foreign strategic investor participation, link‑up with European battery supply chains, and the pairing of mining and ore processing on one site in a region with emerging lithium potential. The timeline aims for construction and commissioning by the end of the decade, subject to reserve confirmation and licensing. A key point is that the project would not only mine the ore but also process it locally, increasing value‑add in Kazakhstan. Given global demand for lithium, the project is seen as a flagship for domestic resource development and foreign direct investment.

Other important details
Alatau Lithium LLP holds exploration and mining licenses for the Upper-Baymurzin, Ahmetkino, Bakennoye, Medvedki, and Yubileyno deposits.
The project is currently in the exploration and design phase; the first industrial lithium production is scheduled for 2028.
Government planning for water, energy, and transport infrastructure (including power lines and rail access) for the mining and processing plant is expected to be implemented through interministerial programs by 2029.
The project is a bilateral German-Kazakh initiative, giving it strategic and commercial significance for both countries.
The EPC contractor has not yet been publicly announced; full-scale construction will depend on completion of geological studies and obtaining all regulatory approvals.
